How can I help my friend through divorce?

There are very few things in life more emotionally difficult than divorce and none other than friends and family can help a person get through this harrowing time. Psychologically, the process of divorce is a series of realizations, grieving, sorting out the blame, letting go, and moving on emotionally.

A friend of an individual who is getting a divorce can help by performing the following:

  • Empathize with your friend. Try and understand his/her pain and confusion, but be wary before handing out advice. Divorcing spouses usually need professional advice, and your role is to just provide support and encourage him/her to speak with a skilled professional.

  • Listen to your friend. While it doesn’t sound like much, listening to a person sort out their feelings is one of the greatest gifts you can offer. Remind your friend that what he/she is going through isn’t abnormal and refrain from setting your friend up with someone new. This can sidetrack the grieving process and leave serious issues unresolved, which may resurface in the future.

  • Discourage your friend from making life-altering choices. Some people going through a divorce develop a “clean start” fantasy and change their career path or move to a new location. Unfortunately, problems don’t go away with a fresh start and need to be handled prior to making any major commitments.

  • Nourish yourself. Helping a friend through a divorce can wreak emotional and physical havoc on you as well. So it’s important to spend time enjoying your own life and staying healthy so you can be beneficial to your friend.
