Who Gets the Friends After Divorce?

Divorce can oftentimes be extremely financially and emotionally straining; however, what people don’t realize, until in the situation themselves, it that this life altering decision can also influence your social life.

Deciding who gets to hang with what friends can surprisingly be harder than dividing up pictures and bath towels.

The Hardships of Divorce

“It’s a dilemma for everybody, and there’s no simple way,” says Dee Ring Martz, a licensed counselor who specializes in life transitions.

She goes on to explain that there is no real formula or process to follow when dealing with these types of situations.

“There are many different personalities and insecurities and wounds,” explains Martz. “It almost becomes required that people take a side, if it’s really nasty.”

Second Wave of Grief

According to Martz, who went through a divorce herself, dealing with who gets to keep their relationship with certain friends can often lead to a second wave of grief.

“There’s a sense of betrayal. If friends are choosing the other person over them, it’s another sense of huge loss,” she says. “Not only is the person gone, and the marriage if gone, but now their friends are gone.”
