Why does each state have its own distinct child support formula?

Why does each state have its own distinct child support formula?

The federal (U.S.) government encouraged the 50 states to each make a child support law formula that would provide a fair and just amount of support to children living there. The cost of living differs significantly among the states, as does the standard of living. A single federal formula would not be "a good fit" for all 50 states.

Family Law Is State Law

State legislators are most familiar with the issues surrounding child support in their home states. In addition, the laws that apply to marriage, divorce, and child custody are all state laws, not federal laws. It is appropriate that the child support formulas be developed by the individual states, as are all of the state's family laws.

Child Support Formulas Change

States are also free to modify their child support guidelines and formula as they see fit; these modifications do occur with some frequency, in part to keep up with the times. Your divorce lawyer is your best resource for finding out exactly what the current child support formula is in your state.
