What documents do I need to bring with me when I meet with my divorce lawyer?

There are a number of documents you must bring with you when you have your initial consultation with your divorce attorney. You should bring all financial documents such as tax returns, corporate tax returns, business balance sheets , etc., which will help your attorney determine the income, expenses, marital and non-marital assets, and liabilities of both you and your spouse.

In the event that you don't have access to your financial information because your spouse has been responsible for the family's finances, your attorney will solicit the information during the divorce proceedings.

Additionally, if you and your spouse have a prenuptial agreement, post-nuptial agreement, or any other pending legal documents whether they are civil or criminal, you must bring them to your initial consultation with your divorce lawyer.

It would also be helpful if you organized all of your income and expense information including business and personal records on a computer disk or a printout. Keep in mind that when meeting with your attorney for the first time, you can never bring too much information.

You may also consider bringing any evidence that would be vital to your divorce case . If you are a victim of domestic violence and you have photographs of an episode, you must show them to your lawyer so he/she can help determine the best way to protect your legal rights and interests.

Lastly, it is important to bring a list of questions and concerns for your divorce lawyer. A qualified divorce attorney will be able to answer all of your questions and ease your concerns. In addition, an attorney will work diligently to prepare your case and maximize your legal options.
