Sometimes having the same last name is a problem for any two unrelated individuals. Credit reporting agencies, for example, are notorious for getting people's records mixed up, even though the records are reportedly kept by Social Security number or other non-interchangeable data.
Potential for Confusion
If the name match is both last and first names, e.g., your name and the name of your husband-to-be's spouse are both "Cheryl Smith," you can pretty well expect there to be some confusion. You and she may receive mail and bills meant for the other. However, if the two of you are on good terms, a few calls or letters to the confused creditors or other parties should clear things up.
Keep Track of Your Credit Record
It's a good idea to check your own credit record annually, even if there's no potential identity confusion, to make sure that there are no mistakes. If you find any inaccuracies, simply write a letter to the credit agencies to clear up the matter. Equifax, Transunion, and Experian are the three main agencies.
