Going through a divorce can be both emotionally and financially straining for all of those involved.
According to divorce experts, when two spouses separate it’s easy for them to want it done in the quickest most efficient way, which in the end could be costly.
Being Cost Efficient
Since divorce is such an emotional process, it can often be difficult for people to focus, or pay any attention, to their finances at the time.
Stephanie AuWerter, Editor of SmartMoney.com, says that it’s essential to go into a divorce having done all your prep work beforehand.
“The best and easiest thing you can do is get your financial paperwork in order before seeing a lawyer,” says AuWerter.
Important Tips
Getting together paperwork like your tax returns, 401K statements and other important documents ahead of time are highly recommended.
“Just because you have a lawyer, doesn’t mean you should rush to court. No matter how upset you are with your spouse, you can save a ton of money if you can settle outside of court,” explains AuWerter.
Divorcing couples are also encouraged to not forget to pay their bills, no matter how much stress they’re under.
