Divorce laws more scrutinized with upcoming elections The controversy over gay marriages has the possibility of becoming one of the defining presidential election topics. “Family values” are a highly scrutinized topic, with divorce rates being as high as they are and the debate over whether or not gay marriages should be legalized. President Bush has proposed to budget as much as $1 million for initiatives to promote marriage, which is another controversial topic as many people feel the issue does not involve government intrusion into private aspects of life.

The fact that divorce rates are skyrocketing has resulted in innumerable amounts of literature from all angles being written, touching on all aspects relating to marriage and divorce law. Attempts to curve divorce rates are being approached in the wrong way, according to many critics, and instead divorce laws should better focus on minimizing the negative impact it can leave splitting spouses and especially children. Efforts to change divorce law processes have surfaced in a couple states by the name of collaborative divorce.
