Indiana Man Charged with Bigamy

A man in Anderson, Indiana has been released from jail on a $10,000 bond for charges of bigamy. Forty-one year old Jeremiah Thurman was turned in to authorities by his wife when she discovered that he had another spouse.

Prosecutor Rodney Cummings, who filed the charges, however believes that Thurman may be legally married to as many as three women. “This case is very confusing”, commented Cummings.

Sharon Thurman apparently wed Jeremiah Thurman in 1989 and then filed for a divorce that was never completed in 1996. In 2002, Thurman was married to another women while still legally married with children to Sharon Thurman. Court records also assert Thurman was married yet again to another woman from 1986 through 1988, and filed for divorce with another in 1987.

Thurman allegedly applied for a marriage license with an additional woman in 1999, but whether or not the couple married is unconfirmed.

In the United States, knowingly being married to more than one person at a time is considered a crime that is punishable by up to nine years in prison.

Jeremiah Thurman is currently a member of the National Guard who is now employed by Anderson University. He is also an Iraqi War veteran.
