The California Supreme Court reportedly held a hearing for arguments regarding same-sex marriages yesterday in San Francisco.
However, according to reports, it was hard to determine how the court may rule on the controversy subject.
How the Court May Rule
Legal experts say that it’s difficult to gauge what conclusions the court will come to because the legal issues surrounding same-sex marriages are so complex.
“I think in the end we can expect a divided opinion,” explains Lawrence Levine, a legal expert on same-sex marriage.
Rulings of the Past
In the past, the court has ruled in favor of same-sex marriages on several issues.
For example, regarding granting legal protections to gays and lesbians in child-custody cases and forcing private clubs to offer this same opportunity to same sex couples as married members.
What Was Discussed
During the hearing questions were supposedly raised about the state domestic partnership law.
Whether or not courts should place themselves ahead of voters or the Legislatures when it comes to defining marriage was also discussed.
