Dating Life After Divorce

After ending his marriage in 2004, Phil Lee, a fitness-business owner, felt as if he had been branded with a scarlet “D” across his chest.

“At my age, a lot of the women I meet have children themselves, so it’s generally a back and forth over each other’s children,” explains Lee. “Women that don’t have children and don’t want to have children don’t really talk to me.”

Hitting the Town After Divorce

The divorce rate is reportedly at it’s lowest since 1970, only 40 to 45 percent of marriages will end in divorce.

However, for those who do end up divorced, a Dutch study shows that divorce reduces one’s chance of having a successful relationship, a little more for women than for men.

“Many people hide these truths because they don’t want to scare off a potential date, but hiding such information will make your date feel tricked,” explains Christie Hartman, a psychologist from Denver.

Coming Clean on a Date

According to Hartman, if you’re going through a divorce, it is best to tell your date immediately.

Although, Hartman also explains that it’s important to save too much information about your past relationship or the reasons why the marriage ended until after a few dates, after you and your date are comfortable with each other.

“Know what you want out of your relationship and what you’re capable of. Be honest with yourself first, then with potential partners,” says Hartman.
