A new study just released by Statistics Canada shows that divorced men are more likely to suffer from depression than married men and females.
Though the stereotype may be that men typically relish in the fact of being single again, the study finds that men take separation far harder than women do.
The Statistics
In general, both men and women who endure divorce are more likely to become depressed as a result than those who remain with their significant other. However, the study shows that men who divorced are six times more likely to experience depression than men who remained married.
According to the study, women who had undergone marital breakups were 3.5 times more likely to have an episode of depression than those females who remained married.
About 12% of people who were no longer in a relationship reported to have suffered from depression in contrast to the 3% of those who maintained a relationship becoming depressed.
Reasoning Behind the Findings
Michelle Rottermann, an analyst at Statistics Canada and author of the study says she’s not all that surprised by the study’s results.
“On the one hand we know depression in general tends to be more common among women, but there is also a lot of evidence that shows that men have fewer social supports and social support does seem to play a role,” she explains. “Perhaps one of the reasons why men are more at risk of experiencing subsequent depression is because one of their main sources of social support is their partner, their spouse, and now she is no longer there.”
