According to recent reports, the majority of Americans believe the divorce is morally acceptable.
A survey conducted by Gallup’s 2008 Values and Beliefs found that 70 percent of those in the U.S. find divorce to be acceptable.
This is supposedly an 11-point increase from a survey that conducted only seven years ago.
Divorce Becomes More Common
Researchers believe that two generations of high divorce rates have made divorce something that is becoming quite normal in the U.S.
“Since 1970, that’s 42 million divorces, shattering the lives of 40 million children,” says Mike McManus, co-founder of Marriage Savers. “We have the highest divorce rate in the world.”
Of the surveys 16 ethical issues rated in regards to moral acceptability, divorce supposedly topped the list.
Alarm in the Church
For those who are religious, this overall understanding of divorce in America is causing alarm and concern for the morality of people as a whole.
“Divorce violates the condition of marriage vows, especially for Christians, because we commit to each other and to God until death do us part,” explains H.B. London, the vice president of Church and Clergy at Focus on the Family.
