Oregon is now one of a handful of states across the nation that will offer certain marital benefits to same-sex couples. Beginning January 1, 2008, gay couples in the state will be able to enter into “domestic partnerships.”
Earlier this week, Governor Ted Kulongoski gave his approval to the domestic partnership bill, saying it would “transform our state from one of exclusion to one of complete inclusion.”
The measure—which had in the past been blocked by the Legislature—will allow same-sex couples to reap some of the benefits afforded to married couples by entering into contractual agreements.
Several other states have passed similar measures including California, Vermont, New Jersey, Washington, Connecticut, and Maine. New Hampshire is expected to be added to this list—once Governor John Lynch signs a recently passed civil union bill.
Massachusetts is currently the only state to allow same-sex marriage.
