First Week after Holidays Sees Most Divorces

A new study has found that more people will begin the divorce process on Monday, January 8 than any other day of the year. The study also showed that more divorce proceedings are begun in the week first full week after the holidays than any other week of the year.

The study questioned 100 divorce lawyers who all said that the week beginning January 8 has been one of their busiest.

“We’re expecting this to be our busiest day and indeed our busiest week,” said divorce lawyer James Stewart.

He said that Christmas is what seals the deal for a lot of couples, and leads to the surge in divorce lawyer solicitation.

“Extra time together can force problems that already exist in the relationship to come to a head,” Stewart said.

Other Study Findings

The study also found that 20 percent of marriages are troubled.

When people seeking divorce were asked what led them to finally begin the divorce process, 27 percent said they were doing it because they discovered their spouse was having an affair. This was the leading cause of divorce reported by those surveyed.

When these 27 percent were asked how they learned of their spouse’s infidelity, 54 percent said they discovered it for themselves, 20 percent said they learned when their spouse confessed, four percent said they learned from the person who their spouse was having an affair with, and one percent said they were told by letter or text.

The second most common reason for divorce was “falling out of love.” Of the more than 2,000 people surveyed, 22 percent cited this as their motivation.

About 16 percent of women and six percent of men surveyed said the reason for their seeking a divorce was an instance of serious abuse.
