Marriage Ed Courses Adopted in U.S.

Many states throughout the country are setting aside funds and encouraging couples ready to marry to first enroll in a marriage education class.

Marriage education classes are being set up with the help of church’s and community centers so couples can learn about the ups and downs of marriage before tying the knot.

State officials hope these classes will help alleviate the currently high divorce rates and in turn help reduce poverty levels.

States Promoting Classes

Texas is the most recent state to push marriage education and has put more than $7.5 million towards reducing divorce rates.

Critics of marriage classes argue that they are a waste of money and such counseling should be left to religious groups and therapists.

More than 28 other states are in waiting to start their own classes with funding help from the Bush Administration’s program, which is aimed at fostering healthy marriages.

Divorce Rates In America

According to a study conducted by the Center for Law and Social Policy (CLASP), every state has adopted at least one policy aimed at reducing divorce rates since the 1990’s.

The study also shows that states with the highest divorce rates, like Nevada, are the most aggressive in promoting marriage.

In order to reduce poverty, which also results from divorce, state welfare programs have been encouraging couples to stay together and when this fails, they aim at helping single parents receive spousal support.
