Some states are now requiring couples who are going through a formal separation or divorce and who have children to take parenting classes.
It is no secret that divorce is a stressful, sometimes tumultuous time for all those involved. Separation and divorce, as stressful as they can be for adults, are even more so for children.
Now, depending on the state, a family court judge or a state Supreme Court judge will be allowed to order parents to enroll in parenting programs to help alleviate the stresses of divorce.
According to program advocates, parenting classes can equip couples with the tools they need to help their child(ren) cope with the short- and long-term consequences of a divorce or formal separation.
Specifically, parenting programs provide parents with tools to help buffer the impact of divorce for children. They also teach parents what to expect from their children, particularly how they may respond to the stress of divorce.
By alleviating some of the stress for their children, parents can also ease some of their own.
