Passport Denial Program
The State Department has recently started denying non-custodial parents who owe more than $2, 500 in child support to receive a passport.
Since millions of travelers need passports to fly back and forth from Mexico, Canada and South America, officials claim that under the Passport Denial Program, the pace is expected to double this year.
According to reports, states have already collected $22.5 million through the program.
“It’s been amazing to see how people who owe back child support seem to be able to come up with good chunks of money when it involves needing their passport,” explains Adolfo Capestany. “ Folks will do anything to get that passport, so it’s a good collection tool.”
