According to reports, DNA paternity tests are now available at pharmacies throughout the United States.
The first wave of marketing for these do-it-yourself tests is being sold as Identigene and by Sorenson Genomics.
Tests Spark Curiosity in Consumers
For many consumers in America, the tests have provided an easy and private way to a crucial question.
“Everyone is purchasing the tests because they’re curious,” explains Douglas Fogg, the chief operating officer at Identigene. “They’re looking to establish questions about their own child or their own paternity.”
Fogg expects at least 52,000 tests to sell this year alone.
How Accurate Are the Tests?
Many genetic experts are questioning the accuracy and ethics of the new tests being heavily marketed and sold.
“We all need to take a step back and realize that is different than many tests you take,” explains R. Alta Charo, a professor of law and bioethics at the University of Wisconsin. “This is a life-changing moment.”
Susan Crockin, a lawyer who specializes in reproductive technology, says that consumers shouldn’t depend on these tests to be effective in court.
“The jury’s still very much out on these tests in terms of reliability and establishing a chain of custody,” says Crockin.
