Debate Over Same-Sex Marriage Continues

A Boston-based legal advocacy group that helped gay marriage become legal in Massachusetts is continuing to fight to expand same-sex marriage in other states.

The Gay & Lesbian Advocates & Defenders have been surveying the 10,000 same-sex marriages that have happened in Massachusetts to see whether or not they want federal benefits and the equal tax treatment that heterosexuals receive.

GLAD Runs Ad About Couple Burials

GLAD also recently ran an ad in two publications asking for same-sex couples to contact them if they wanted to be buried in Arlington National Cemetery.

The ads were catered towards military veterans who want to be buried with their partners or if they unsuccessfully sought to care for their spouse under the federal law that allows workers to take paid medical leaves.

GLAD Takes Aim at Marriage Act

Carissa Cunningham, spokeswoman for GLAD says that the group is taking aim at the federal Defense of Marriage Act (DOMA) of 1996.

The act is being criticized by GLAD since it says no state needs to recognize gay marriages from another state and denies same-sex spouses federal benefits.

GLAD hasn’t decided whether they are going to file a suit or urge Congress to repeal the act.

However, Cunningham claims that the group is targeting the provision that denies same-sex couples federal recognition.

“We are not interested in forcing any other state to do anything on marriage laws,” Cunningham explains. “We’re looking at where the act most affects married couples and where the law may be vulnerable.”
