As the summer draws to a close and the new season begins, many couples decide to part ways as they send their children off to school.
According to divorce lawyers from various parts of the country, more people opt to split at the end of the summer and after the holidays than during any other part of the year.
A Divorce Lawyer’s Busy Season
As reported by the National Center for Health Statistics, there were more than 870,000 divorces in the U.S. last year alone.
“Every year, it’s like clockwork,” explains Gaetano Ferro, the president of the American Academy of Matrimonial Lawyers. “ You know the phone is going to start ringing like crazy at that time of year.”
Why Do People Choose to End in August?
Divorce lawyers and law professors tend to believe that couples often wait until their family vacations are over and the kids are set up in school before deciding to split.
Summers, like the holiday seasons, can often mean less stress for couples. It is a time when many parents take time off work and the children are away at camp.
“People don’t want to initiate something when they’re in the Hamptons or in Europe,” explains Robert Dobrish, a divorce lawyer in New York.
Summer is also the time when therapists are on vacation, causing for rocky circumstances where couples feel they can’t communicate openly about their relationship.
“We all reflect on the summer ending or a new season starting,” says law professor, Nancy Ver Steegh.
