Ten Most Expensive Celebrity Divorces

While couples contemplating or enduring a divorce know that they may lose some of their assets, this fact is painfully evident for those who find themselves shelling out millions of dollars to their ex-spouses. Among the wealthiest people getting divorces are celebrities, some of who have paid hundreds of millions of dollars to their former partners.

According to an independent Web site, the top ten most expensive celebrity divorce settlements in U.S. in the last 25 years include (in descending order, starting with the largest settlement):

  • The 2007 divorce between Michael and Juanita Jordan, settled at $150 million
  • The 1995 divorce between Neil Diamond and Marcia Murphey, settled at $150 million
  • The 1989 divorce between Steven Spielberg and Amy Irving, settled at $100 million
  • The 2004 divorce between Harrison Ford and Melissa Mathison, settled at $85 million
  • The 2008 divorce between Paul McCartney and Heather Mills, settled at $60 million
  • The 1999 divorce between James Cameron and Linda Hamilton, settled at $50 million
  • The 1998 divorce of Michael and Diandra Douglas, settled at $45 million and two houses
  • The 2004 divorce of Lionel and Diane Richie, settled at $20 million
  • The 1999 divorce of Mick Jagger and Jerry Hall, settled at about $19 million.

Reasons for Such Large Divorce Settlements

In each of these cases, the amounts of the divorce settlements were so extravagant due to one or more of the following factors:

• A spouse was caught cheating
• The spouse earned a significant portion of his or her assets during the marriage and with the support of the other partner
• The substantial length of the marriage

Despite the fact that the celebrities on the above list paid out such hefty divorce settlements, most of them are now currently remarried.
