Child support collections reportedly hit a new high in Shelby County, Tennessee last month due to new collection efforts and the federal government’s national stimulus package.
While these high numbers are reflect positively for divorcing couples in court, low staffing in the county clerk’s office reportedly could threaten any child support progress in the community.
More Child Support Money Available
According to reports, in the month of July alone Shelby County Juvenile Court’s collections peaked at $10.7 million, which proved to be a 29 percent increase from the previous months.
“That’s a lot of money for the kids and people who are depending on it,” says Larry Scroggs, the chief administrative officer for the court. “It’s a big measureable increase.”
What is Causing the Increase in Support?
Researchers claim there has been an increase in child support in various parts of the country, which is believed to be the result of the federal government’s stimulus checks.
An intercept program also allowed the Department of Human Services to divert stimulus checks, lottery winnings and tax refunds towards child support.
